SaddleBrooke Ranch Women’s Golf Association (SBRWGA) started an event-filled fall with the Sadie Hawkins Tournament. This year’s fiesta theme provided great decorations, food, and fun. The SBRWGA members invited their best fellas to be their partners for this tournament day. The only catch, the fella could not be your spouse or partner from last year. No defending the title; these ladies like to spread it around.
Inflatable saguaro cacti sporting sombreros flanked a colorfully draped table outside the pro shop, offering the golfers muffins to sample before the golfing began. The teams were warming up for this two-person net best-ball competition. Well wishes were bantered about with the sentiment “I hope you come in second” heard around the practice facilities. Spirits were high as the golfers rearranged bags onto their teammates’ carts and transferred empty carts to the Ranch House parking lot for a quick exit after the results were announced.
Players were greeted at each tee by mylar saguaros adding to the collective ambiance. Treats were sprinkled around the course. Could anyone one-putt on the third green for a shot? Was your favorite chip still available when you approached the 8th tee? This reporter enjoyed the expert green reading of her teammate and apologized for the lack of technique that hindered the sinking of many of those correctly read putts.
Live scoring on the Golf Genius app was hindered by a few blips in technology, quickly resolved by the resilient Sue Schuster and Joanne Garcia. These ladies were assisted by fellow golfer Jean Cheszek before the event to ensure the teams and flights were accurate.
The buffet was ready, and groups were able to find their seats at themed tables and many quickly lined up for a margarita at the bar. Diane Taylor, your SBRWGA president, had a few words of welcome and after some announcements turned over the master of ceremony duties to golf pros Mike and Ken for the results.
What a fun day golf fans. Winners posed for pictures, continuing the fiesta theme.
The closest to the pin winners were Linda Chonle on hole number 2 and Joanne Oliver on hole number 14. Steve Schuster hit a shot for the win on hole number 5 and Steve Thomson fired his tee shot accurately to win on hole number 2. Melanie Timberlake had a chip in on hole number 2 earning her recognition for great play and a low score on the hole.
This year’s winners are: Flight One—Marci Whitehead and Jeff Pharr at -6. Flight Two—Debbie Ferguson and Harley Schlachter at -7. Flight Three—Marge Rodgers and Joe Cimo at -9. Flight Four—Kay First and, not her husband, David First at -4. Flight Five—Linda Chonle and Tony Wells at -7.
A big Ranch thank-you to Monica Bartko and the social committee, with special mention to Phil Bartko and Trish Kelly for the day of setup. A great time was had by all. You won’t want to miss next year’s event. Ladies, you better lock down your fellas!
