This summer the National Parks Club put a focus on our members to share their experiences in our national parks with the group and interested SaddleBrooke Ranch (SBR) residents. On Aug. 12 the last of the series was presented.
SaddleBrooke Ranch resident Charles Hester discussed hiking in the Grand Canyon. Charles is a veteran hiker with four hikes into the Grand Canyon and many other trekking experiences. While the information gave insights specific to the Grand Canyon, the list of logistical and personal preparations could be used for planning other trips since he informed us where to stay, food and water to bring, weather conditions, and routes to take.
Charles took us along the 13–mile Rim Trail with its flat and shady areas. A shuttle can then take you to the Grand Canyon Village. You can stay there or venture ahead to the bottom of the canyon to Phantom Ranch. At this site you will find cabins, a ranger station, and a canteen. After another 13 miles on the South Rim Trail, you arrive at Hermits Rest Area. A shuttle can return you to the Ranch or you have your choice of the South Kaibab Trail or the Bright Angel Trail, which lead you on a journey to Phantom Ranch and up to the North Rim.
There are campgrounds, mule trains to carry your baggage, and cabins. There are many other sights to see outside the canyon—Tusayan, Williams, and Flagstaff.
Charles emphasized to carry only what you need, as it can get heavy after a few miles. Lightweight camping gear is available to purchase. Before adding your food, don’t let your pack weigh more than 12 pounds—20 with food and water. Trekking poles and snow shoes are also a must. Always check with the rangers about the availability of water on the trail, and make sure you have at least 5 liters per day per hike with you.
If you can walk 6 to 8 miles per day around SaddleBrooke, you are in good training for a Canyon Hike. Be sure you are fit!
