SBR Women’s Golf Association News

Char Burrill

It has been a quiet month for golf, although the women of the SaddleBrooke Ranch Women’s Golf Association (SBRWGA) have maintained their weekly league play despite our warm temperatures. We are looking forward to the cooler temperatures on the way as we prepare for the three remaining tournaments of the year.

In early September we will hold our annual Updegraff Tournament. On Sept. 5, participants will meet on the event patio to learn whether they will be on the pink team or the blue team. Then, on Sept. 8 and 9, the two teams will compete in match play. This tournament has special significance to us as it is played in honor of Dr. Ed Updegraff, a longtime resident of SaddleBrooke Ranch and a big supporter of our league. In 1999, “Dr. Ed,” a lifelong amateur and dedicated proponent of the game of golf, was awarded the Bob Jones Award, an honor given annually to an individual who demonstrates the spirit, personal character, and respect for the game as exhibited by Jones. As amateur golfers ourselves, we all aspire to live up to “Dr. Ed’s” example.

October brings our annual Member/Member Tournament. SBRWGA members compete with a partner in a two-day competition. The format for the tournament is a two-person net best ball. The competition is keen and members are already lining up their partners. The tournament is held on Oct. 13 and 14.

Our last tournament of the year is our annual Club Championship. This two-day tournament is played on Nov. 10 and 11 and is our only gross score tournament of the year. The overall winners are the 2025 Club Champion and Senior Club Champion. A member must have played and posted ten (10) SBRWGA League Day events within 12 months prior to the tournament date to be eligible to win either the Club Championship or Senior Club Championship and must also be 70 years of age, or older, to win the Senior Club Championship. However, all members are eligible to win in their respective flights.
